SBG Idaho grapplers continued their busy 2017 with a contingent being sent to the NAGA Oregon Open, March 11th in Portland and the IBJJF Pan Am Championships, March 16-19th, in Long Beach, California!
SBG Idaho brought home an entire hardware store from the NAGA Oregon Open! Our Growing Gorillas, represented by Kason Brown, Titan Oberbillig, and Cash Burgess, had an outstanding show of skill and technique. Kason and Cash both took home silver medals in their no-gi divisions and gold in their gi divisions, and Titan took silver in both his gi and no-gi divisions! In the adult divisions, Jeremy Pate showed great strides in his jiu-jitsu game taking Gold in the no-gi Heavyweight division and Bronze in the Heavyweight gi division! Coach Michael Ransom took silver in his gi Brown Belt division. Coach Michael was unable to compete in the finals due to a knee injury suffered in a Brown Belt exhibition match against a tough competitor prior to competing in his division.

SBG Idaho Head BJJ Coach, Scott Thometz, and Purple Belt, Stephanie Hernandez, along with other members of the worldwide tribe, traveled to the prestigious IBJJF Pan Am Championships, to test their skills against some of the very best competitors on the planet!

Hernandez lost her opening match in the Light-Feather Purple Belt division via arm bar, to her division’s eventual bronze medalist. Hernandez showed great skill defending sweep and submission attempts from her opponents aggressive guard before eventually succumbing to the submission.

Coach Thometz competed in the stacked Black Belt Middleweight division that included former Pan Am and World Champion, Romulo Barral, Pan Am and World Champion, Otavio Sousa, and many more! Thometz started his tournament with a bang, dominating his opponent in route to a 30-0 win! Thometz won his second match when his opponent suffered an injury and could not continue. In his third round quarterfinal match, Thometz was dealt a loss via points to eventual silver medalist Isaque Bahiense Braz, from Alliance. Overall, a great quarterfinal showing for his first IBJJF competition at black belt!!!
