What is Krav Maga?
Krav Maga is a martial art that originated in Israel and is designed for military and law enforcement purposes. It is based on striking, grappling, and weapon defense techniques. Krav Maga is known for being brutal, aggressive, and ruthless. It teaches you how to inflict maximum damage on your opponent in the shortest time possible, which is not something that we should be teaching our kids and isn’t something which most people will ever need in life.
The Problem with Krav Maga Classes
While Krav Maga might sound appealing to some people, it also has some drawbacks that you should consider before signing up for a class. First of all, Krav Maga is not regulated or standardized, which means that the quality and safety of the instruction can vary widely depending on the instructor and the gym. Some Krav Maga instructors might have little or no experience in real combat situations or might teach outdated or ineffective techniques. Some Krav Maga gyms might also have a toxic or abusive culture, where students are encouraged to hurt each other or themselves in the name of realism. At SBG Idaho we have instructors who have over 80 years of combined experience across numerous disciplines. We ensure that all of our members feel safe in our classes, and we want our members to thrive in our culture.
Secondly, Krav Maga is not very practical or realistic for most self-defense scenarios. Most of the techniques taught in Krav Maga are based on the assumption that you are facing a single, unarmed attacker who is trying to kill you. However, most street fights are not like that. You might face multiple attackers, armed attackers, or attackers who are not trying to kill you but just want to rob you or intimidate you. In these situations, using Krav Maga techniques might escalate the violence or get you into legal trouble.
Thirdly, Krav Maga is not very enjoyable or rewarding as a martial art. Because Krav Maga is focused on survival and not on sport or competition, there is little room for creativity, expression, or improvement. You will not learn how to flow, adapt, or strategize in a fight, like you will in our BJJ classes. In learning Krav Maga, you will not experience the thrill of testing your skills against a skilled opponent in a controlled environment. You will not feel the satisfaction of earning a belt or a stripe after months or years of hard work.
Why you should consider BJJ classes rather then Krav Maga in Boise.
That’s why we recommend that you learn BJJ instead of Krav Maga. BJJ is a grappling-based art that focuses on controlling and submitting your opponent using leverage, technique, and strategy. Unlike Krav Maga, BJJ does not involve punches or kicks to the head or body, which can cause serious injuries or legal problems. BJJ teaches you how to restrain your opponent without hurting them, which is especially useful for self-defense situations.
BJJ has also proven to be one of the most dominant martial arts in mixed martial arts (MMA) competitions, such as the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). Many UFC champions have used BJJ as their primary or secondary fighting style. BJJ fighters can be effective off their back, which gives them an advantage over other grapplers who are not comfortable in that position. BJJ also teaches you how to attack the neck, arms, and legs from anywhere, which can end a fight quickly and decisively.
BJJ is suitable for people of all ages, genders, and sizes. You don’t need to be strong, fast, or athletic to practice BJJ. You just need to be willing to learn and improve. BJJ is also a great way to stay in shape, make friends, and have fun. You will never get bored in our Jiu Jitsu classes because there is always something new to learn and challenge yourself with.
