SBG Idaho had another outstanding showing Friday night at Front Street Fights 13 in Boise, Idaho!
Stephen Stirewalt (SBG Idaho) defeats Jose Martinez via Submission (Rear Naked Choke) at 2:07 of Round 1 Our night started with a bantamweight bout featuring SBG Idaho Coach Stephen Stirewalt taking on Jose Martinez. The fight started with Stirewalt looking for his range with his jab, backing up Martinez to the cage while landing punches and a kick to the body. Stirewalt landed a right before changing levels and finishing a big double leg takedown on his opponent. Stirewalt maintained his posture and controlled Martinez’s legs passing right into side control before sliding his knee across into mount. Martinez ate a punch before giving up his back to the SBG Idaho coach. From there Stirewalt swarmed, landing multiple punches before finding the open neck of Jose Martinez for the rear naked choke finish, which was secured at 2:07 of the very first round!
Kyle Frost (SBG Idaho) defeats Michael Farrer via Submission (Rear Naked Choke) at 1:41 of Round 1 In a welterweight bout, the undefeated Frost wasted no time taking his opponent to the ground with a double leg. Farrer holds on to a guillotine choke but did not keep control of Frost with his legs and hips allowing Frost to pass right to mount 15 seconds into the fight. Frost smothers Farrer from mount, landing some hard punches that cause his opponent to turn away, giving up his back to the SBG athlete. From here, Frost landed some hard shots that expose Farrer’s neck for the rear naked choke finish.This was Kyle’s 5th first round finish!
Michael Garcia defeats Billy Carothers via Unanimous Decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28) The evening’s co-main event begins with Garcia attacking Carothers’ legs with kicks, a body kick is caught by Carothers that allows him to clinch and press the Team No Excuse fighter against the cage. The two men jockey for position with Carothers landing some knee strikes to his opponent. Garcia reverses the position but cannot maintain control as Carothers reverses and puts him back against the cage. Referee Tom Supnet separates the two and returns them to the middle of the cage where they tentatively feel each other out with strikes. The round picks up with Garcia landing strikes on Carothers that cause him to rush in with strikes. Garcia changes levels for a double leg takedown that Carothers defends, but the persistent Garcia keeps driving, taking Carothers down to the mat. Carothers recovers back to his feet almost immediately using the cage before separating the clinch back to the middle of the cage where the 2 men exchange strikes until the end of the round. Carothers starts round 2 more aggressively with his strikes. Garcia shoots for another takedown which is defended by Carothers who gains double underhooks and pins his opponent to the cage. Carothers maintains great control, landing a good amount of knee strikes until Tom Supnet separates the men with 2:10 left in the round. The two exchange strikes until Garcia catches a kick which Carothers uses as another opportunity to gain double underhooks and press Garcia against the cage. Carothers controls his opponent until separated by the referee again. Immediately Garcia comes out swinging charging in with a flurry before the two men separate. The round ends with Garcia taking Carothers down, however Carothers immediately gets back to his feet as the round ends. Carothers shoots for a takedown early in round 3 that is defended into a clinch with Garcia. Carothers continues to dominate the clinch against the cage until broken up by the referee with 3 minutes left in the fight. Carothers is getting the better of the striking, landing some hard punches and kicks that cause Garcia to shoot in. The takedown is again defended by Carothers who uses it as another opportunity to pin his opponent against the cage. Carothers is a bit more aggressive, peppering Garcia with strikes before separating and moving back to the center of the cage. Garcia uses his strikes to enter a clinch but is immediately reversed again by Carothers against the cage, where he continues to dominate until they separate with 10 seconds left in the fight. Garcia shoots another takedown that is defended effortlessly by Carothers. A great showing by Carothers, however the judges saw it otherwise, giving the unanimous decision to Garcia.
In other action, SBG Idaho alumnus, Elmar Umarov, returned home to Boise for his professional debut, defeating Abraham Campos via armbar submission at 1:55 of the first round of their lightweight bout!
SBG Athletes Kyle Aslami and Benjamin Hollier were also schedule to compete, however Aslami’s opponent missed weight by a large amount and Hollier suffered an illness prior to the match that caused both matches to be called off before the event. We look forward to seeing both men compete very soon!
